Kids' sizes are named after ages, but they are cut for heights. A tall 5-year-old and a short 7-year-old can wear the same size 6. Measure your kid and read the size off the height.

The ages are when a kid of average height is in that size. Brands differ by about one size in either direction, so check the brand's own chart before you order.
Measure again every few months. Half an inch can move a kid from the middle of a size to the top of it, and that changes what to buy for next year.
2T, 3T and 4T are toddler sizes. They are cut with room for a diaper and a rounder belly. Sizes 4 and up are cut slimmer and longer. A 4T and a 4 are close in height, so a kid leaving 4T usually moves to a 5.
